Working mom life has an added layer of difficulty. Don’t get me wrong, mad props to stay at home moms (seriously mad props) but having a 9-5 poses special challenges.
First, the mom guilt is brutal. Why would you want someone else to raise your child? Don’t you miss your kid when you are at work? Why would you want to expose to your little baby to all those germs? Do you trust your daycare workers with your kid, there are so many horror stories out there?
Yes. The answer is yes to all of the above. I do miss my son when he is at school, I do wish he wasn’t exposed to so many germs, I do worry about who is taking care of him and if they are teaching him the right things and if he has friends at school.
BUT, I also love my job, I love my team and my clients and I love getting up every morning with a purpose outside of being a mom. I love helping business owners and nonprofits reach their goals. It’s my passion.
Second, finding a daily balance is a fantasy. At least for me. Some days I work really hard and get home to sit my son in front of an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and order a pizza. Other days I am slow and steady at work and turn off my phone at home while we play in the backyard and I put a five-star meal (at least by my standards) on the table. No day is balanced, especially in the nonstop life of mommin’ and PR.
My ultimate goal is to look at it long-term and make sure my son is raised loving his home life and his family but also respecting that mom and dad have passions outside the home and jobs they both love.
Unfortunately, this is one blog where I don’t have a step-by-step list for you to make balancing a demanding career and being a mom any easier, because to be honest, I haven’t figured that out yet. What I will tell you is that I’m doing the best I can and if you are a mom (or dad) reading this — so are you!
So as we head into back-to-school season give yourself a break and focus on the long-term. And if you can’t do that, there is always wine. 😉
