The North #BossLadies are excited to be rounding out Women’s History Month with some #BossTalk with Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan!
A proud Ojibwa woman, with her election on November 6, 2018, LG Flanagan became only the second Native American woman to ever be elected to statewide executive office in U.S. history. She served as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), she represented the western Twin Cities metropolitan area.
On July 28, 2016, Flanagan became the first Native American woman to address the Democratic National Convention (or any convention of a major party), from the podium.
In an exciting episode, the boss ladies talk with LG Flanagan about the balance (and help) it takes to be a rising political star, a single mom, an advocate and a measured leader, and suggest some life hacks to help you hold onto your boss lady swagger while walking into many rooms full of “bro energy.”
The ladies also spend some time talking about how boss ladies everywhere can have an impact in big and small ways — whether it’s running for office like LG Flanagan, or just volunteering and engaging in your community!
You can follow along with LG Flanagan’s journey by checking out her social media, @LtGovFlanagan on Twitter and @peggyflanagan on Instagram. Discussed in today’s episode were some of Lt. Governor Flanagan’s favorite women that she looks to for inspiration, including Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of Children’s Defense Fund, as well as writer and advocate Dr. Adrienne Keene, found on Twitter at @NativeApprops.
She has also recommended a few songs for our #BossLadies to add to their boss lady playlist, including a few of her favorites like “Let Em Say” by Lizzo and “Formation” and “Freedom” by Beyoncé.
