How Employees Can Represent Your Brand

Around the North office there has been some buzz among staff about the discovery of some not-so-nice cartoons found in an employee workspace in Lilly Pulitzer’s headquarters located in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The “Fat-Shaming” cartoons have gotten a lot of attention after being publicized by New York magazine. Some try to argue that this was just an employee’s personal workspace and should not be a reflection of the company as a whole, but at the end of the day it did put the entire Lilly Pulitzer brand under fire.

One cartoon drawing read, “Just another day of… Fat, White, and Hideous… You should probably just kill yourself…” The text on the other image stated, “Put it down, Carb Face.”

The discovery of these cartoons follows the release of Lilly Pulitzer’s line in Target stores. Many customers were upset that the line’s plus-sized clothes were only available online and not in stores.

The company has been cited in saying, “These illustrations were the work of one individual and were posted in her personal work area. While we are an employer that does encourage people to decorate their own space, we are a female-dominated company and these images do not reflect our values. We apologize for any harm this may have caused.”

This unfortunate incident for Lilly Pulitzer is a reminder to companies, big or small, that your employees represent your image and brand. Its a strong reminder to be mindful in the viral world we live in, anything and everything you put out in the world, can literally be put out there for the masses to see.
