Get To Know #MakingMandyMoves:
What Jeopardy category could you clear, no problem?
Anything related to history or literature! That degree has to be worth SOMETHING.
Favorite Office Snack?
Can coffee be considered a snack? Coffee, for sure.
Best account to follow on social media?
@mstiefvater is my favorite young adult author from when I was growing up. She’s funny, she’s down-to-earth, and many of her posts just make you want to go out into the world and explore.
Who do you admire and why?
Ellen DeGeneres. That woman is a shining light no matter how dark the world is and I hope she remains that way for the rest of time.
Where do you look for inspiration?
Often times, whatever I am reading or the Internet, honestly. We live in an age where if you need a feel-good story, you can find it in minutes and sometimes, that’s just what you need to spark some inspiration. Find a TED Talk or a fantastic article and build on the greatness it leaves you with.
Best piece of advice you have ever received?
When I was in high school, I made a pretty big decision a la college that made a HUGE difference in my life, and when I was in the midst of making that decision, my counselor told me “It’s okay to stray from the path.” If you are like me, you have color-coded binders spelling out your life from now until the end of time. Realize that it is okay to stray from that path you have made for yourself. It will not be the end of the world. Take chances on new opportunities and get distracted on a new path for a bit, that original path will always be waiting for you and it is better to take every chance you can than regret never taking any.
Tell us about your position at North:
I am a learner, a writer, a planner, an organizer, etc. BUT, technically speaking, my title is Client Services Coordinator. I partner with Macy and Melissa to help them achieve the North vision for Client events, I work with communications as needed, and I am the lead on our exciting new project, Boss Talk!
How did your education prepare you for your career?
My degree is in history and literature, which are all about writing. I learned how to know the point I want to get across and how to back it up, something which helps me in communications every single day. Research and analysis were also a huge part of my education and I am thankful for those skills when it comes to my work around North.
How has working in your industry changed the way you look at the world?
I definitely notice spelling mistakes in social media posts more often now.
Share a notable (funny, embarrassing, exciting) experience you’ve had at work:
Back when I was an intern and we didn’t often work together, Allison was playing The Greatest Showman soundtrack on her phone at a conference while I sorted through the name tags nearby. I started singing along and she goes, “YOU KNOW THE GREATEST SHOWMAN? Melissa, I like her” and I am pretty sure that moment has a lot to do with my further career at North.
How do you handle work-life balance?
This is definitely one I am still working on, but most of the time, it just comes down to setting aside some relax-and-rewind Mandy time at the end of the week. If I don’t slow down and give myself a break between work social and personal social, I will burn out. Letting a good book or a quick nap be a barrier between the two helps me to remember that they both can be draining, and that’s okay.
What advice would you give yourself in college?
Stop and smell the roses! You have the rest of your life to be a grown-up, so sometimes it is okay to slow down and be a kid for a bit.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I can identify every single Disney song ever by the first couple of seconds. I also used to dance and do acrobatic as a kid and my hidden talent is contortion! If I ever go missing, there’s a good chance I ran off with the circus.
What is something you’re proud of?
I graduated with my Associate’s Degree before I turned 18 and my Bachelor’s Degree before I turned 21. I can also make a mean bowl of guacamole (thanks Chipotle!)
